Biden urged by International Campaign for Tibet to pressure Xi to return to dialogue with Tibet during Biden Xi meeting

San Francisco: Expressing concern over the issue of Tibet not coming up during the Joe Biden-Xi Jinping meeting, the International Campaign for Tibet has urged the US President to pressure Beijing to return to direct talks with representatives of the Tibetan people.

“Xi’s meeting with President Biden comes at a critical moment given the Chinese leader’s brutal control of Tibet, including intensive securitization of the Tibetan Plateau and unprecedented Sinicization of the Tibetan people. Raising these concerns directly with President Xi is the most is important.” The International Campaign for Tibet said in a statement.

Many other groups, including Tibetans, Uyghurs, and the Chinese people themselves, have been denied the freedom to air their grievances and seek redress from the Chinese government. It says Xi and his officials should also listen to their voices and the Biden administration has an opportunity to motivate them to listen.

“In particular, President Biden should pressure Beijing to return to direct negotiations with representatives of the Tibetan people, as he promised to do during his 2020 campaign,” the statement said.

However, a readout of the meeting released by the White House said Biden raised issues with Xi during the summit in Woodside, California.

“Biden underlined the universality of human rights and the responsibility of all countries to respect their international human rights commitments. He raised concerns regarding human rights abuses in the PRC (People’s Republic of China), including in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong,” the White House said.

“On Taiwan, President Biden stressed that our One China policy has not changed and has been consistent across decades and administrations. He reiterated that the United States opposes any unilateral change to the status quo by any side, we hope cross-strait differences will be resolved by peaceful means, and the world has an interest in peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. ,” it said.

Biden called for restraint in China’s use of military activity in and around the Taiwan Strait. The White House said they also expressed concerns about China’s unfair trade policies, non-market economic practices and punitive actions against American companies that harm American workers and families.
