date: Annually, on December 22, National Mathematics Day honors the birth anniversary of renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. This year, the festival is falling on Friday.

History: National Mathematics Day began in 2012 when Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India at that time, remembered the contributions of Srinivasa Ramanujan to the field. The purpose of the declaration was to recognize Ramanujan’s legacy and dedication to mathematics. Since this proclamation, December 22 has been designated as National Mathematics Day every year.

Importance: National Mathematics Day serves as a platform for teachers, students and institutions to emphasize the important role of the subject in human advancement. The day encourages collaboration, fostering a growth mindset among learners and teachers alike. The day honors Ramanujan’s contributions to mathematics, which also honors his great standing in the field.

Ramanujan number: When the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was hospitalized in London in 1918, his longtime friend and colleague GH Hardy visited him. After saying hello and realizing that fellow mathematicians had arrived in a taxi numbered “1729”, Hardy entered Ramanujan’s room, saying, “It was a dull number.”

When Ramanujan learned about it, the mathematician said, “No Hardy, this is a very interesting number.” It is the smallest number that can be expressed in two different ways as the sum of two cubes.” This discussion, which forms the basis of the mysterious Hardy–Ramanujan number, is reflected in Robert Knagel’s biography, “The Man Who Knew Described in “Infinity”.

According to Ramanujan, the sum of the cubes of two different number pairs is only 1729: 123 + 13 and 103 + 93.
