Fact Check: Old video of mother-son reunion amid Israel-Hamas ceasefire being shared as fresh

Decision: (deceptive)

The video is from 2018 and has no connection to the current ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

What is the claim?

On the night of Saturday, November 25, as part of a four-day ceasefire and prisoner-hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, Hamas released a second group of hostages to Israel. CBS News reported that Hamas released 17 hostages and Israel released 39 Palestinian women and children from prison.

Meanwhile, a video of a woman crying and running towards a man to hug her is going viral on social media, with claims that it shows a Palestinian mother meeting her son, who has been killed. He has been released under the ceasefire agreement. A similar post on Was released yesterday. What are the facts?

Reverse searching the keyframes of the video led us to a Facebook post published on February 12, 2018, which contained the same video. This page is from a community group called “Al Mujtaame Al Liabiu”. The caption of the post, translated from Arabic, reads, “He was imprisoned at the age of 18 and released at the age of 38. His mother was patient for so many years, but she is no longer patient for these minutes.” She ran to him and everything passed. #Mama Hadi, come, mother. Oh God, protect our mother, Lord of the worlds.”

On February 11, 2018, a report published by Al-Jamhuriya al-Youm, a local media outlet covering Arab news, featured the same video and said it showed a Palestinian man sentenced to spend 20 years in an Israeli-occupied prison. After is shown meeting his mother. ,

We found the same video posted on November 4, 2018, on another Facebook group named “A Shayrat Al Shuraat”. The caption read, “Watch a touching video… A Palestinian mother embraces her son who was arrested in Israeli occupation prisons. He was 18 and passed away at 38.”

Decision

The viral clip shows a man being released from an Israeli prison, but it is from 2018. This does not reflect the current prisoner-hostage exchange between Israel and Hamas. Therefore, we have marked the claim as misleading.
