India summons US diplomat Gloria Barbena over State Department’s comment on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest

India on Wednesday expressed “strong” objection to the remarks of the US State Department spokesperson regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In response, in a statement issued soon after summoning a senior US diplomat, the State Department said, “We take strong exception to the comments of the US State Department spokesperson regarding certain legal proceedings in India.”

The ministry said, “In diplomacy, states are expected to respect each other’s sovereignty and internal affairs. This responsibility is especially important when dealing with other democracies. Otherwise, it could set an unhealthy precedent.” Is.”

The Ministry of External Affairs said that India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary, and added that “it is unfair to cast doubt on that”.

In Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs had summoned American Acting Mission Deputy Chief, Gloria Barbena. The meeting lasted for about 40 minutes.

The summons comes two days after a State Department spokesperson said the US is closely monitoring reports of the arrest of Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal and supports a fair legal process. “We encourage a fair, transparent and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal,” the US official said in response to a question from Reuters. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Kejriwal last week on corruption charges.

The development comes days after India summoned Georg Enzweiler, deputy chief of mission of the German Embassy in India, over New Delhi’s “internal affairs” in response to Germany’s comments about the Delhi chief’s arrest. ED arrested Kejriwal at his residence late Thursday night and will keep him in custody till March 28. He was arrested for alleged money laundering in connection with the ongoing Delhi Excise Policy case, which was scheduled in 2021-22 but was later cancelled.

The arrest has also been sharply criticized by domestic opposition political parties. The ED has claimed that Kejriwal was the mastermind behind the policy which led to the arrest of other senior members of Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In a counter claim, AAP claimed that the money trail in the Delhi liquor policy case goes back to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
