Merchant ship belonging to Israel damaged in Indian Ocean in drone attack, maritime agencies, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram

A drone attack on Saturday damaged a merchant ship in the Indian Ocean and caught fire, news agency AFP quoted two maritime agencies as saying. There were no reports of any casualties in the attack off the Indian coast. According to AFP, the ship has been identified as a “Liberia-flagged chemicals/products tanker”, said to be affiliated with Israel.

The incident was confirmed by the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations and maritime security firm Embrey. The drone attack has raised concerns about the security of shipping lanes in the region.

According to AFP, Embrey described the attack as saying, “A drone attack occurred on a Liberian-flagged chemical/products tanker resulting in an explosion and fire. As of last report, the fire on the ship has been brought under control, And the ship floats.” The firm also highlighted the ship’s affiliation with Israel.

United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations issued a warning to ships in the area about the incident and urged increased vigilance. The specifics of the attack, including the type of drone used and the organization responsible, remain to be confirmed.

Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram is headed towards MV Chem Pluto, a merchant vessel in the Arabian Sea, 217 nautical miles off the Porbandar coast, after it is suspected to have caught fire due to a drone attack, news agency ANI quoted defense officials as saying.

“The ship was carrying crude oil and was on its way to Mangalore from a port in Saudi Arabia. As per information received, the fire has been extinguished but its functioning has been affected. ICGS Vikram has been deployed on patrolling of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone It was directed towards the distressed merchant ship. All crew are safe, including about 20 Indians. ICGS Vikram has alerted all ships in the area to provide assistance, defense officials told ANI. .

According to ANI, Indian Navy officials said that naval warships in the vicinity are also moving towards the merchant ship MV Chem Pluto in the Arabian Sea outside the Indian EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone).
