Pakistani parents kill teenage daughter, Italian court sentences them to life imprisonment

An Italian court has sentenced the parents of a Pakistani teenager to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of murdering their daughter after she refused to marry her cousin in their homeland. On Tuesday, a court in Reggio Emilia sentenced the parents, Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen, to life in prison, while the victim’s uncle, Danish Hasnain, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, the Guardian reports.

In November 2022, the body of 18-year-old Saman Abbas was dug up in an abandoned farmhouse in northern Italy near the fields where her father worked, a year and a half after she was last seen on surveillance video walking with her parents I went.

Italian prosecutors argued that Saman was killed by his family on May 1, 2021.

She immigrated from Pakistan to Novellara, a farm town in Italy’s northern region of Emilia-Romagna, as a teenager, the Guardian reported.

Saman had given up wearing a head scarf in Italy and started dating a young man of her choice. She also posted a photo on social media of herself kissing her Pakistani boyfriend on a street in the regional capital Bologna.

Italian investigators said the kiss angered Saman’s parents, who wanted her to marry a cousin in Pakistan.

The victim had reportedly told her boyfriend that she feared for her life as she had refused to marry an older man in her homeland.

The teenager’s autopsy revealed that her neck was broken, possibly caused by strangulation.

Her father, Shabar, was extradited from Pakistan in August and professed his innocence during a tearful statement in court before the hearing. Nazia was tried in absentia and is believed to be in Pakistan.

His two cousins, who were prosecuted in the case, were found not guilty and the court ordered their release from jail.
