PM Sheikh Hasina after winning Bangladesh elections

New Delhi: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attacked the country’s opposition on Monday, a day after securing a record fourth consecutive term as her Awami League party won two-thirds of the seats in the general elections.

The 76-year-old leader, who has ruled Bangladesh since 2009, won a fifth term overall on Sunday in a one-sided election that was boycotted by the main opposition and had a low turnout.

Addressing a press conference, PM Hasina said, “Those who have links with terrorist organizations or are engaged in illegal activities are afraid of elections and avoid contesting elections, they contribute to the victory of the people, Not mine.”

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the election after Hasina rejected its demand to resign and allow a neutral authority to run the general election. The party claimed that any election under the current government would not be fair and credible.

PM Hasina further said that India is a “great friend” of Bangladesh and she considers India as a “neighboring neighbour”.

The Bangladeshi Prime Minister said, “India is a very good friend of Bangladesh. They supported us in 1971 and 1975. We consider India as our neighbour. I really appreciate that we have wonderful relations with India.”

She was referring to her period of exile when she lived in India for six years after the murder of her family members.

In August 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his wife and his three sons were assassinated in their home by military officers. His daughters Hasina and Rehana escaped the purge as they were abroad.

He said that the main focus of his government in the next five years will be on economic progress.

“Our main focus in the next 5 years will be on economic progress and completing all the work we have started. We have already declared our manifesto and will try to fulfill our promises whenever we prepare our budget. If we do, we will follow our election manifesto.” Development of the people and our country is our main objective,” he said.

PM Hasina said that the people of Bangladesh are very smart by nature.

“By nature, our people are very smart and as I mentioned we want to train our young generation for the future. It is our goal to develop the country by 2041. Smart population, smart government, smart economy and smart Society is our main objective.” The goal,” she said.
