Senior Hezbollah commander killed in Israeli strike in Lebanon

New Delhi: An Israeli strike on Monday killed a senior commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force in southern Lebanon. The exchange of attacks on the border amid ongoing fighting in Gaza has raised fears of another Mideast war.

Security sources identified him as Wissam al-Tawil, the deputy head of a unit within the Radwan force, news agency Reuters reported.

Another Hezbollah fighter was also killed when his car was hit in an attack on the Lebanese village of Majdal Selm, according to security sources.

“This is a very painful attack,” a security source told Reuters. Another said, ‘Things are about to explode.’

More than 130 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in southern Lebanon in Israeli bombardments since cross-border shelling began following a Hamas attack on Israeli territory on October 7, according to the news agency. Another 19 people have been killed in Syria.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah warned Israel not to launch a full-scale war on Lebanon in two televised addresses last week.

Nasrallah said, “Anyone who thinks about war with us – in a word, will regret it.”

Meanwhile, Israel has said it has largely completed major operations in northern Gaza and is now focusing on the central area and the southern city of Khan Yunis.

Israeli officials have said fighting will continue for several months as the army seeks to eliminate Hamas and repatriate many of the hostages taken during the terrorist group’s October 7 attack that started the war.

The war in Gaza was triggered by an unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, resulting in the deaths of about 1,140 people, the majority of whom were civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

According to Israel, the militants also took about 250 hostages, of whom 132 are still in captivity, at least 24 of whom have been killed.

In response to the attack, Israel has been carrying out sustained bombings and ground offensives, which have killed at least 22,722 people, the majority of whom are women and children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
