US State Department Matthew Miller will await the results of India’s investigation into the conspiracy to kill Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Pannun.

The United States has said it will await the results of India’s investigation into the ‘attempted assassination’ of Sikh separatist leader Gurpavatwant Singh Pannun by an Indian citizen on US soil. Addressing reporters at his daily press conference, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US takes the issue very seriously and will await the outcome of India’s investigation into the matter. The US Justice Department has recently accused an Indian officer Nikhil Gupta of allegedly conspiring to assassinate Khalistani separatist leader Pannun in America.

“…I said I would not comment on the underlying material because this is an ongoing law enforcement matter and it would be inappropriate for me to do so while the DOJ (U.S. Department of Justice) is presenting the case in court. I also made that clear. We have noted at the most senior level of this Government, the Secretary of State has raised it directly with his foreign counterpart that we take this issue very seriously. He told us that they will be conducting an investigation. He has publicly has announced an investigation and we will now wait to see the outcome of the investigation. This is something we take very seriously,” Miller said.

He said the US also urged India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation into allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen.

Notably, India described the case as “a matter of concern” and said that follow-up action would be taken based on the findings of the panel investigating the allegations.

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden’s Principal Deputy National Security Advisor John Finer took note of the Indian government’s decision to set up a panel to investigate allegations that an Indian official attempted to assassinate a separatist Sikh leader. In the US, a readout from the White House said. It said Finer acknowledged India’s understanding of the importance of setting up an investigative committee and holding accountable anyone found responsible for this act.
